Lads Need Dads

Based in Tendring, North East Essex, Lads Need Dads CIC is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, set up to prevent potential problems and address existing ones where boys are missing a father-figure in their lives. Lads Need Dads provides a unique long-term preventative early intervention Programme aimed at equipping, engaging and inspiring boys aged 11-15, to reach their full potential.

Why we do it:

Across the UK 2.7 million children live in lone parent families and 1.1 million children are growing up without a father in their lives at all. Countless statistics show that boys, where a father is absent and who have no appropriate male role model, may struggle as teenagers and are at a higher risk of low self-esteem, and/or dropping out of education, anti-social behaviour, substance abuse and crime. Lads Need Dads believe prevention is crucial in reducing the growing number of boys each year who underachieve at school, struggle with their mental health, are excluded from school or engage in offending behaviour.

How we do it:

Lads Need Dads provides an 18-month early intervention programme, which looks at the whole child’s needs during the critical years of 11 to 15. It empowers and enables boys to become motivated, capable, responsible, resilient and emotionally competent, attributes essential to reduce risk.

Our long-term programme provides boys with male-led group mentoring, in the form of a self-development school group-work programme, bush-craft survival and outdoor activities, practical life-skill training, community volunteering, leadership and peer mentoring opportunities.

Upon graduation, all participants can attend an ambassador group, where they can continue to meet with their peers and mentors and receive on-going, open-ended support.
