Fabio Zucchelli is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Appearance Research, UWE Bristol. His work to date has focused predominantly on the lived experiences of individuals with visible differences (or ‘disfigurement’).
In recent years he has conducted research exploring men’s experiences of alopecia, in collaboration with Alopecia UK, with the applied goal of providing more suitable and gender-relevant support and information to men with alopecia.
Fabio has also conducted research and taught on men’s body image and exercise, and men’s attitudes towards peer-to-peer sharing of mental health challenges. He is also particularly interested in masculinities and their impact on the health, wellbeing and opportunities of men and boys, as well as women and girls.
Before becoming an academic he also worked as a freelance health writer, contributing to men’s organisations including CALM and Men’s Health Forum (Beat Stress, Feel Better booklet). In this work he also drew from his personal experience of mental health challenges.
